At the end of the first chess module in
Victoria Road Primary, Walker Road Primary, and Tullos Primary,
all three schools competed in an end-of season chess tournament,
kindly hosted by Tullos Primary School.
Kay Diack and David Fryer had organised
activities to mark end-of-year celebrations of the innovative
and highly successful Aberdeen Children’s University (CU).
Chess is one of three key activities promoted during CU’s first
year of OOSHLAS, along with Smart Arts and Young
Investigators Club.
Children’s University is about children
exploring different ways of learning and gaining accreditation
for this. It aims to develop a culture of achievement and
lifelong learning from an early age, and focuses on the
transition stage between primary and secondary school.
This initiative is the first of it's kind
in Scotland. More information can be obtained from Kay Diack on

The aims of Aberdeen’s CU are inextricably
linked with the five National Priorities for Education, as well
as our national commitment to lifelong learning
The Chess Tournament took place during the
Torry Gala Week, on Tuesday 14th June, from 1.15pm –
2.45pm. Pupils from P4 – P7 from each school made up teams of 12
for the event.

All the young chess enthusiasts conducted
themselves in a sporting manner, and in the chess tradition,
shook hands before and after each game.
There was a buzz of excitement and
expectation during the event as the players battled for
supremacy, each hoping to secure a point for their school team.

The competition was keenly contested
throughout, with a tiny margin separating all three schools at
the end, as Walker Road just inched ahead near the finish to win
the team trophy by half a point.
