Invitations to take part in the event
were sent to schools throughout the city. Twenty-eight
primary schools and academies took part in the tournament,
which is more than one-third of all city schools.

Lord Provost John Reynolds had planned
to attend the event, but had to withdraw because of a clash
of dates with the Russian Oil and Gas Exhibition in Moscow.
However, organisers and competitors were delighted to learn
that the Lady Provost was to deputise, performing the
opening ceremony, chatting to guests, and presenting awards
at the end of the tournament.
This new tournament is now the top
event in the local chess calendar, and is expected to
attract increasing numbers of schools and competitors each
year.
