THE LORD PROVOST'S CUP

The second ‘Aberdeen Lord Provost’s Cup’ chess tournament took place in the historic setting of Town and County Hall in Aberdeen’s Town House.

Lord Provost John Reynolds has been an active supporter of schools chess since he took office in 2004. He was delighted to learn that more than half of all Aberdeen City primary and secondary schools had accepted his invitation to this year’s event.

The secondary section finished in a three-way tie for first place between Sean Gordon (Northfield Academy), Daniel Maxwell (St Machar Academy), and Danny McKinnon (Harlaw Academy), all scoring 5/6. It is very difficult to avoid tie-break procedures when there is a three-way tie for first place (if two are tied, a 5 minute play-off ensues). In this case, all three players had recorded a win and a loss against the other two tied players, with the tie-break giving the cup to Sean.

The primary was won by Ian McDonald (Gilcomstoun), who scored an unbeaten 6/6. Adam Dyk (St Peter’s) was second on 5/6, with no fewer that 10 players tied equal third on 4/6.

During the presentation of prizes, The Lord Provost told the players that he was delighted to see so many schools representatives in attendance at the tournament, and spoke at length of the importance he attaches to a good education. He went on to say that his great interest in chess spans many years, and that he believed there was very strong evidence that chess playing and study had transferable skills that impacted positively on the social and academic lives of young people.

The Lord Provost then spent some time chatting to parents, teachers, and students.
