The first Aberdeen Boys and Girl

The first Aberdeen Boys and Girls Championship attracted an excellent total of 86 entries. It was particularly pleasing to see 30 girls compete in their event, which was won by 2004-05 player of the year, Samantha George (Smithfield Primary School).

Aberdeen girls have won the Scottish Team title for four consecutive years, and judging by the standard of this event, they may well make it five-in-a-row.

Many of the girls commented that they really enjoyed the format, and suggested that more girls’ tournaments should be added to the calendar. This is something that will be arranged next season.

The Boys Championship produced an extremely close finish, with a play-off necessary to determine the winner. Two players finished on 5 points, and no fewer than 10 players tied equal 3^rd, all scoring 4 points. The play-off was contested by two St Machar Academy students and good friends, Daniel Maxwell and Michael Adam. Each player had recorded wins against the other during the season, but on this occasion it was Daniel who emerged victorious.

Players between the ages of 7 and 15 years competed in the events. Plaudits go to all the competitors, as every one of the 200+ games was contested in a spirit of good sportsmanship, which meant that the arbiter (referee) was not required to settle any disputes.

Awards were made to the top 4 players in each event, and also to the players with the best scores in each age group
