THE
EVENING EXPRESS TROPHY

The magnificent
EVENING EXPRESS TROPHY is awarded to the winners of the oldest local
primary teams’ event in the N.E. chess calendar. It was donated by
Aberdeen Journals in 1974. Set on a solid base, the 10 inch high trophy
has a cast figure of a rook rising from the centre of the base,
surrounded by individually carved chess figures. The King sits proudly
on top of the rook – the King of the Castle! The inaugural event was won
by Broomhill Primary School during season 1974-75.
Originally,
competing schools mutually agreed dates to play matches throughout the
season on a league basis. This format was changed in the 1990’s, when it
became increasingly difficult to arrange fixtures. Nowadays, the
tournament is played on one day each year, with all teams playing a
number of games to decide the overall winners.
All known N.E.
chess playing primary schools are invited to send a team of four players
to challenge for the trophy. It has been competed for on 31 occasions,
and won by 11 different schools. Only 4 schools have won the Evening
Express Trophy on more than one occasion, but best by a long way have
been Robert Gordon’s, who have won the event no fewer than 16 times
