A pilot
chess in schools project, supported by Aberdeen City Council, is again
producing excellent results as end of season finals get under way.
Smithfield Primary School Chess Team has won the North East Primary Schools
Chess Championship, held at Northfield Academy on Saturday.
The
team, Gail Rennie, Samantha George, Lewis Sharp, and Dylan Cameron, were the
only team to remain unbeaten during the competition. The event was closely
contested throughout, with the decisive final match of the tournament giving
Smithfield the championship for the first time. Last year's winners
Quarryhill and Muirfield finished second equal.
Smithfield, Quarryhill, and Muirfield, had previously qualified for the
teams final of the Scottish Junior Chess Primary Championship.
The
final takes place in Dunkeld this Sunday. Middlefield, Westerton, and
Muirfield have also qualified for the Scottish P5 & Under Teams Final at the
same venue this weekend.
Several
players have qualified or been selected for prestigious individual finals
and Invitational events.
Scottish
Junior Chess have chosen Hampden Park, Glasgow, to stage the Scottish
Individual Grand Finals for the Primary 5 and Under, Primary 6/7, and
Secondary categories on May 22, while the Chess Scotland Primary Individual,
a two-day invitational event for Scotland’s top chess players, takes place
in Pitlochry on the weekend of June 4-5.
Primary
pupils from Smithfield, Quarryhill, Sunnybank, Muirfield, and Cults play at
Hampden, and five players, from Smithfield, Quarryhill, and Sunnybank have
been invited to Pitlochry.
