The highly successful 2004/05 season finished with a
truly hectic finale: six ‘big’ events in the space of 9 days!
The final Grand Prix event took place on June 12.
Afterwards, end of season awards were made to players who had reached
pre-determined points totals in the Aberdeen Chess Academy Grand Prix. The
idea of the Grand Prix is to reward effort and commitment, rather than just
expertise (although excellence is celebrated too!). All points scored in
every event are accumulated, and once target scores are reached, players
qualify for an award. 15 points are required to win a silver medal, 25
points for gold, and 40 points for the top award, a very desirable cup.

Eleven Grand Prix Tournaments took place during the
season, attracting 160 players, who are listed in the final table. Of this
total, 49 players won the silver award, 26 won the gold medal, and four
players were awarded cups. Two players competed in every event, and a
further 10 players competed in 10 of the eleven events.
Among those who took part in the Grand Prix were
Aberdeen Lord Provost John Reynolds (see report on ‘Lord Provost’s Cup),
Councillor Ramsay Milne (see report on ‘Ramsay Milne Trophy’), and teachers,
parents and grandparents.
