NORTH-EAST NOVICE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

STAKIS CUP

February 18 is the date for this year’s North-East Novice Championship Shield and Stakis Cup. These tournaments are regular features in the local calendar, both having been played for since the 1990’s.

The Novice Championship is open to new or less experienced primary school chess players, with a format that ensures that play is continuous. Players are given a new opponent as soon as possible after each game has finished, and no one is ‘knocked out’ of the tournament, even if they lose some games.

The Stakis Cup is for more experience players who are looking to improve their grade (ranking). Nearly all entries will have existing grades, with an upper limit of 1100.

Both events have proven to be amongst the most competitive of the season.
