Middlefield Primary School Chess Team has won the Evening Express Trophy for the first time. They beat Robert Gordon's into second place, with Newmachar finishing third.

The Middlefield team recently finished second equal in the SJC Primary Teams Final in Dunkeld. However, this victory firmly establishes the team as no.1 in the northeast. The school chess club, which meets once a week, has enjoyed some minor successes since it’s formation in 2001, but this has easily been their best season to date.

Team members Stephen Dunbar and Alex Farquhar have also qualified for SJC national individual finals to be held at Murrayfield in June.
