Assistant Teachers Chess Course (Part 2)
Smithfield Primary School In-Service
Training Day 19.11.07
The first part of a Smithfield Primary School pilot
in-service chess course to ‘teach the teachers’ took place in April, but
due to problems in finding a suitable date, the second part was delayed
until November. However, there was again a healthy turnout, with 12
members of staff taking part, including 4 new starts.
At the conclusion of both parts of the course there
was an expressed wish from staff to undertake additional training at
regular intervals. It was felt that this should continue until a
standard had been reached that would enable participants to feel
confident enough to run one-to-one, or small group sessions with
specific children who might benefit from chess tuition.
If similar
outcomes and reactions to this pilot were reproduced across the city, a
huge un-tapped source of chess coaching personnel will have been
uncovered. This could provide a major breakthrough in widening the scope
of Aberdeen City Council’s chess project, and prove crucial to
large-scale sustainability.
