1ST ANNUAL DOUBLES TOURNAMENT REPORT

Doubles are hugely popular with juniors throughout the world. In this variation of chess, two players compete as a team, passing all pieces won from their opponents to their partner. Players can add pieces to the board when it is their turn to play, and skip a move.

On Saturday, 12th November, 2005, Aberdeen Chess Academy staged the first annual Doubles Championship to be held in Scotland. 29 teams took part in this fun event, with all partnerships choosing a team name prior to start of play. A prize was awarded to the team choosing the most interesting name, which went to ‘The Optimists’ – an appropriate title for most chess players!

The event was won by team ‘ConRick’, the partnership of Connor Melville and Ricky Dickson, who scored 5/5. Runners-up were the ‘Dark Magicians’. Everyone who played enjoyed this novel tournament and agreed that it was a great addition to the chess calendar.
